NOPAL EXPLORER - Bayahibe & La Romana

The Nopal Explorer wreck, just off Bayahibe, is one of our favourite shallow dives in the Dominican Republic. This substantial cargo ship, which went down in 1983, now rests on its side in just 6 metres of water. We love that it’s completely accessible to open water divers, offering a real sense of exploration without the depth anxiety. Swimming over the deck, you’ll find schools of sergeant majors flitting around the old winches, and we’ve often spotted eagle rays cruising by in the bluer water just off the wreck. Inside the holds, where the containers were once loaded, squirrelfish hang in the shadows, their eyes catching the ambient light filtering from above. It’s a site that really lets you take your time, poke around the different sections, and appreciate how the ocean reclaims these steel structures. The shallow depth means fantastic light penetration, making the colours pop even on an overcast day. We’d suggest going early to beat any potential boat traffic, giving you a quiet hour or so with just the wreck and its resident critters.
