NUESTRA SENORA DE LA CONCEPCION - Sosua & Puerto Plata

Diving the Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion is less about the wreck itself, and more about the history beneath your fins. We love a good historical site, and this one, sitting at 32 metres, is a real time capsule. It’s not an intact ship, mind you; centuries of Caribbean currents have scattered her remains. What you get are cannon, anchors, and ballast stones spread across the seabed, giving you a real sense of the immense force that brought her down. Our favourite part is always picturing the scene, thinking about the Spanish galleons carrying treasure. You’ll spend your dive poking around these remnants, spotting schools of sergeant majors darting between the cannon barrels, and the occasional green moray eel peeking from under a coral-encrusted anchor. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and the slow reclamation of man-made objects by the ocean. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light can be stunning as it filters down onto the deeper sections.
