LE CENTENAIRE - Ocho Rios

Le Centenaire isn't just a wreck; it's a history lesson resting in impossibly shallow water just off Ocho Rios. We love this site for its accessibility and the sheer audacity of its story – a French warship from the late 1700s, sunk by the British. At barely two metres deep, you're practically snorkeling, but don't let the depth fool you into thinking there's nothing to see. You'll spend your time here floating above scattered timbers, cannons, and ballast stones, all now heavily encrusted with sponges and hard corals. We've seen schools of juvenile snapper darting between the cannon barrels, and we usually spot a moray eel tucked into a crevice. It’s a site for explorers, for those who appreciate the quiet conversation between history and nature. Our favourite time to visit is mid-morning, just as the sun gets high enough to really illuminate the seabed, making the water glow and highlighting every detail of the old ship. It’s a gentle dive, or rather, a long snorkel, perfect for a leisurely afternoon.
