La Famille Express - Providenciales

Alright, let's talk about the *La Famille Express*. If you're coming to Provo, you've seen this one, sitting high and dry, just begging for a closer look. Now, this isn't a deep dive, not even a shallow dive in the traditional sense. It's more of a snorkel and free-dive playground, but we absolutely love it for what it is. The *La Famille Express* ran aground during Hurricane Frances back in 2004, and she's been a fixture ever since. We’re talking about a proper metal-hulled cargo ship, surprisingly intact above the waterline, which makes for some cracking photos. Below the surface, it’s a whole different story. The hull is a tapestry of soft corals, sponges, and anemones. You’ll weave through schools of tiny grunts and snapper, darting in and out of the rusted plating. Our favourite game here is spotting the territorial sergeant majors, always bold, guarding their patches of barnacles. Visibility is almost always fantastic, often 20 metres plus, especially on a calm morning. Go early to beat the day-trippers. We’ve found barracuda often lurk in the deeper shadows beneath the stern, and every now and then, a small nurse shark will cruise by, unbothered. It’s a great spot for an easy afternoon, a chance to really explore a wreck up close without the tanks, just you and the ocean.
