Mayan Princess House Reef - Ambergris Caye

Pillar Coral is one of those Roatán sites we always try to hit, particularly if it’s been a while since our last visit. The name says it all, really – a magnificent pillar of coral rising from the deep, an impressive natural structure that draws your eye even before you spot any fish. We usually moor on the shallower reef at about 10 meters, but the real show starts when you swim over to the pillar itself. It’s a huge, living monument, draped in seafans and sponges, with schools of snapper and redeye swirling around its base. The top of the spire is around 27 meters, but we've found plenty to explore at a shallower 20-meter max. Our favourite moments here are often just drifting slowly along the wall next to it, watching the light play on the coral and keeping an eye out for the smaller critters. You’ll find blennies poking out from crevices, and we’ve even spotted a few pygmy morays tucked away. Visibility here is consistently good, usually around 20 meters, which really lets you appreciate the sheer scale of the pillar. It’s a relaxed drift, perfect for divers who appreciate dramatic topography and a comfortable pace.
