MARITISANT - Roatán

Maritisant isn’t like the usual purpose-sunk wrecks you find in Roatán. This old steamship, built in 1930, met its end thanks to Hurricane Fifi, tossed onto the reef decades ago. We love that it feels genuinely lost, not just placed. What’s left of the hull is scattered across the shallows, a jumble of twisted metal and big, rusting plates. You’re really diving history here, a proper shipwreck from a bygone era. We’d suggest going at high tide to get the best of it, letting the water lift you over the broken pieces. Look closely among the debris, and you’ll find colonies of garden eels poking their heads out, swaying in the gentle surge. Nurse sharks often nap under the larger sections, tucked away in the shadows. It’s a site that rewards a slow, deliberate exploration, perfect for photographers or anyone who appreciates the quiet dignity of a wreck that’s been claimed by the sea, piece by rusty piece.
