Vertigo - Yap

Vertigo, oh Vertigo. If you’re heading to Yap, this site needs to be on your list, no question. We’re talking about a real adrenaline shot here, not for the faint of heart or the freshly certified. The wall itself is just epic, dropping into the blue so far you can practically feel the void pulling you down. What we love most are the resident whitetip reef sharks. They patrol the edges, sleek and purposeful, often giving you a good look before melting back into the gloom. But don’t just fixate on the big stuff. We always suggest keeping an eye out for the smaller wonders tucked into the crevices; we’ve spotted some ridiculously camouflaged dragonets and the occasional shy sandfish here. The currents can be a serious factor, sometimes ripping along the wall, so listen to your guide and be prepared to fin hard or just hang back and enjoy the ride. Our favourite way to dive Vertigo is early morning, catching the light just as it starts to pierce the deeper water – it gives the whole place an almost mystical feel. This is a site for experienced divers who appreciate a dramatic wall and the thrill of big pelagics in a dynamic environment.
