Matafonua Lodge & Dive Resort - Ha'apai Group
The team at Matafonua Lodge & Dive Resort are the kind of people you just want to hang out with after a dive. They’re based right on the beach, a breezy spot in the Ha’apai Group, and we love how easily you can transition from breakfast to boat. These guys are your ticket to Tonga’s quieter side, a real escape from the more trodden paths. We’d suggest them for divers who appreciate a laid-back vibe and aren’t chasing the big-resort frills, especially if you’re keen on exploring untouched reefs. Diving with Matafonua feels wonderfully personal. The boats are usually small, meaning more space to gear up and fewer divers jostling for position on a bommie. Our favourite part? The sheer number of unexplored pinnacles and walls just a short ride away. We’ve seen incredible hard coral formations here, like giant broccoli florets, and sometimes you’ll just drift along, watching reef sharks cruise by. Look out for the nudibranchs too; the guides have a knack for spotting the tiniest critters. A hot tip: the visibility here can be incredible, sometimes pushing past 30 metres, especially in the calm months of June to October. If you want to experience the tranquil beauty of Tonga, Matafonua is a solid choice.
