Toriike - Ishigaki & Yaeyama

Toriike isn't just a dive; it's an adventure into the geological quirks of Ishigaki. We love this site for its utterly unique double pond system, two freshwater pools on land that connect to the ocean via an underwater cavern. Dropping into the main pool, you're immediately struck by the eerie thermocline where the freshwater meets the saltwater, creating shimmering distortions like heat haze above a road. It’s cool, literally, as the temperature drops noticeably. Our favourite part is navigating the main tunnel, which emerges into the open ocean at about 18 meters. The light show from above, filtering through the pond openings, is something you won't forget, especially on a sunny afternoon. Keep an eye out for the Speckled Groupers lurking in the shadows and the occasional Black-barred Razorfish darting over the sand. It’s a dive that suits those comfortable with overhead environments and a bit of chill, offering a truly distinctive experience beyond typical reef dives.
