The team at Diving School Marea Shinjuku are our top recommendation for diving the Izu Peninsula. They’re based in Shinjuku, which means you’ll be picked up right from Tokyo and driven down to the coast, saving you the hassle of navigating Japan’s excellent but sometimes overwhelming public transport with a dive bag. We’ve always found their instructors to be incredibly patient and knowledgeable, perfect if you’re looking to get certified or just want to refine some skills before heading out to the dive sites. What we really appreciate about Marea Shinjuku is their focus on making a full day out of it. You’ll typically do two dives, maybe at sites like Futo or Atami, where we’ve often seen big schools of horse mackerel swirling around the rock formations. Then, it's usually followed by a fantastic local lunch – think fresh sashimi or a hearty ramen. It's a great taste of Japanese culture both above and below the surface, and frankly, a far more relaxing way to experience Izu’s unique volcanic topography than trying to coordinate everything yourself. Just remember to pack a warm towel, the water can be a bit chilly outside of summer.
