The team at Diving School Marea Tokyo are our go-to for diving the Izu Peninsula. They’re based right there, meaning no wasted time travelling between Tokyo and the dive sites, and they really know their stuff. If you’re looking to get certified, they’re a solid PADI 5 Star outfit, but we think their real strength is guiding divers through Izu’s often challenging, always rewarding sites. We’ve had some cracking dives with them, especially at places like Atami, where the currents can be tricky but the schooling yellowtail are phenomenal. You’ll be surrounded by them, a flashing silver wall that sometimes parts just enough to reveal a giant moray. They're also excellent for shore dives. We’d suggest asking about their local knowledge for finding nudibranchs – Izu is a critter heaven if you know where to look. They’re super organised, from the gear setup to the post-dive hot showers, which are a godsend in winter. Just a heads-up, English can be a little limited with some staff, so brush up on your dive signs or bring a translation app. But honestly, for pure dive experience in Izu, they're hard to beat.
