Gahi Ura

Gahi Ura is one of those Kerama sites we always try to hit, especially if we’ve got a newer diver in the group. It’s got a gentle slope, starting around 5 metres and easing down to about 18, which takes the stress out of things. What we really love here, though, is the sheer density of the coral. Think massive fields of staghorn, vibrant purples and oranges, with little patches of goniopora swaying in the mild surge. You’ll often find us just hovering over a bommie, watching the blackblotch squirrelfish dart in and out of the crevices. The light here, particularly in the morning, filters down beautifully through the shallows, making everything glow. Keep an eye out for porcupine fish tucked under ledges; they’re pretty common. Our favourite part has to be finning slowly across the top reef, about 8-10 metres deep, just letting the gentle current push us along while we soak in the colours. It’s a wonderfully relaxing dive, perfect for photographers or anyone who just wants to take it all in without fighting conditions.
