Keramashoto Coral Reef
Why dive here
With 369+ marine species recorded in the area - including barracuda, bull sharks, humpback whales, seahorses and sea turtles - Nita Doukutsu offers some of Kerama Islands's richest cave diving. Water ranges 22-30°C, warmest July, August, September.
Nita Doukutsu is a different kind of Kerama dive, a real change of pace from the usual reef explorations. What we love here is the light play, especially if you can time your dive for midday. Sunlight slices through the water, illuminating the cave entrance in ethereal shafts. Inside, it’s not dark and spooky, but more of a gentle twilight, letting you appreciate the delicate corals clinging to the walls without needing a super powerful torch. Our favourite moment is always that swim-through, a natural tunnel that opens up into the main cavern. It’s narrow enough to feel adventurous but wide enough not to be claustrophobic. You’ll spot plenty of pink anemonefish tucked into their sebae anemones, and the staghorn corals thrive in the filtered light. It’s a photographer’s dream, particularly for wide-angle shots looking out towards the blue. We'd suggest this site for anyone looking for something beyond just another pretty reef, a dive with a real sense of place and atmosphere.
