PACIFIC ROVER - North Malé Atoll

The Pacific Rover sits proud in the shallows of North Malé, a proper wreck dive for those who prefer their history up close and personal, without the need for deep technical skills. She’s a motor vessel, ran aground back in '85 on a passage from the Maldives to Colombo, and now she’s become an ecosystem all her own. We love that you can snorkel this site just as easily as you can dive it, making it perfect for a mixed group of divers and non-divers. Drop in and you’re immediately enveloped by the sheer scale of her. The bow section is particularly impressive, with schools of fusiliers darting in and out of the rusted metalwork. We’ve often spotted eagle rays cruising past the stern in the late afternoon, and the resident moray eels are practically pets – they’re so used to divers. Our favourite part has to be the engine room access, a tight squeeze but worth it for the sense of exploration. The light plays beautifully through the portholes, illuminating the surprisingly intact machinery. While the wreck itself is the star, the reef surrounding it holds its own with colourful soft corals swaying in the gentle current. It’s a photographer's dream, especially on a sunny day when the natural light penetration is at its best.
