Velassaru Caves - North Malé Atoll

Velassaru Caves is one of those sites we always come back to in North Malé, primarily for the sheer abundance of small, fascinating critters that hide in the nooks. It’s not a dramatic cave dive with massive chambers, more a series of deeply undercut ledges and swim-throughs, which makes it feel intimate. You'll spend a lot of time with your nose close to the reef, scanning for the Malabar groupers lurking in the shadows or spotting the quirky Blackbar filefish doing their sideways dance. Our favourite part is the way the light filters in through the cracks in the overhangs, illuminating patches of honeycomb coral and giving the place a real ethereal glow. We’d suggest a dive here in the late morning, around 10 or 11, when the sun is high enough to really play with those light shafts. Keep an eye out for the small-eyed squirrelfish peeking from crevices; they're everywhere once you start looking. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for photographers or anyone who loves to slow down and really observe.
