Ocean Spirit - Flic en Flac & West Coast

Ocean Spirit, just off Flic en Flac, is one of those sites we always try to hit when we're on Mauritius’ west coast. What makes it a standout for us isn't necessarily the big stuff, though you do get your share of trevally schools. It’s the sheer density of the smaller reef fish, especially those Blacktail Chromis. They hang above the coral heads in these shimmering clouds, so thick it feels like you're swimming through a living curtain. We love watching them part and then reform as you pass through. The coral here, especially the staghorn, provides fantastic cover for the smaller, shyer residents. Keep an eye out for Adorned Wrasse darting in and out, and if you’re lucky, a Flameback Angelfish – their colours really pop against the blue. It’s a pretty gentle dive, usually with mild currents, making it a great spot to just drift and really absorb the details. We often find ourselves spending extra time in specific pockets, just watching the ecosystem at work. It suits divers who appreciate the intricacies of a healthy reef over dramatic topography.
