Matswa - Tofo & Inhambane

Piedra Ahogada, or "Drowned Rock," is one of those sites we always make time for when we're in Morrocoy. It's essentially a massive submerged rock formation, topping out around 10 meters and dropping to 21 meters at its base. Our favourite way to dive it is a slow spiral up from the sand, letting the light change as we ascend. You'll often find yourself eye-level with schools of French grunts, their silver scales flashing, and we’ve spotted scrawled soles camouflaged so perfectly on the sandy patches you have to do a double-take. What really makes Piedra Ahogada sing, though, are the corals. We consistently see great examples of massive starlet coral and mustard hill coral, creating a rugged, textured landscape. And yes, the legend of "Godzilla," the enormous moray eel, is real. We’ve seen that beast, a good three meters long, peeking from its lair on more than one occasion. It’s a site that rewards patience, perfect for divers who love exploring nooks and crannies and aren’t afraid of a healthy current on occasion. Just keep an eye out for those lionfish; they’re becoming more common here.
