Le Pain de Sucre - Saint-Gilles & West Coast

Le Pain de Sucre, or ‘Sugar Loaf’, is one of those Réunion sites that just hits differently. We love its unique volcanic formation, a genuine pillar of rock rising from the seafloor, absolutely plastered in soft corals. It's an intermediate dive, dropping from 10m to about 25m, so it’s perfect for divers with a bit of experience who want more than just a quick look. What makes this our favourite? The scale of the place. You can circle the entire formation, taking in the schools of Sharptooth Snapper that hover in the blue, or spotting the occasional Honeycomb Grouper tucked into an overhang. Keep an eye out for the Dusky Angelfish darting around the corals. If you’re lucky, a Great Barracuda will cruise by, making its presence known. The soft corals here really pop, especially when the light is good, creating a vibrant backdrop to the action. We'd suggest going in the morning; the visibility often holds better and the light catches the corals just right.
