OCEAN TRADER - Trincomalee & East Coast

The Ocean Trader is one of those wrecks that just makes you smile. Sitting upright in only 10 metres of water, it’s a perfect introduction to wreck diving, or just a really relaxed second dive. The visibility here can be superb, often hitting 20 metres or more on a good day, letting you appreciate the whole vessel as you descend. We love finning slowly over the decks, watching the sunlight dapple through the superstructure. Schools of fusiliers are usually so thick they almost block the light, swirling in unison just above the bow. Look closely and you’ll spot crocodile fish camouflaged on the hull plates, and we’ve often seen big schools of batfish hanging out near the stern. It’s an easy swim through the cargo holds, where you can peer into the shadows for reef sharks taking a nap. Our favourite part has to be the mast, which still stands tall, encrusted with colourful sponges and soft corals, providing shelter for tiny damsels and gobies. It’s a genuinely chilled out dive, never rushed, always interesting. Head here in the morning for the best light.
