Peloro Wreck - Split & Central Dalmatia

The Peloro Wreck, just off Split, is one of our favourites in Central Dalmatia. It’s got a real story to it. This isn't some pristine, intact vessel; it’s a tugboat that met a rather fiery end, and that history still feels palpable. We love how the metal is twisted and buckled, giving it a much more dramatic character than a deliberately scuttled wreck. Dropping down, you hit the bow first, then follow the length back to the stern, which is truly mangled. It’s not a huge wreck, so you can take your time, really poking around the engine room area where much of the damage occurred. Sunlight filters through the gaps, illuminating schools of chromis darting in and out, and the occasional scorpionfish blending perfectly with the encrusted metal. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light is better then, especially for photography, and the site tends to be quieter before the afternoon boats arrive. It’s a dive that suits those who appreciate historical wrecks and the way the sea reclaims things, more than pristine corals. You’ll find moray eels tucked into crevices, their heads peeking out, and nudibranchs grazing on the growth covering the hull.
