Wreck Graveyard - Split & Central Dalmatia

We've always been drawn to the Wreck Graveyard near Split, not for one grand wreck, but for the sheer concentration of history scattered across the seabed. It’s a dive that tells a thousand small stories, each metal fragment a testament to a forgotten purpose. You’re descending onto an archaeological site, really, where the remains of several World War II vessels – fishing boats, cargo ships, maybe even a small landing craft – lie in various states of decay. The best way to experience it is to take your time, drifting slowly over the debris field. We love spotting the gnarled frames of what were once fishing trawlers, now home to clouds of chromis and the occasional grumpy scorpionfish tucked into a crevice. Look out for octopus peeking from overturned hull sections. The water here often has that deep Mediterranean blue, and when the sun hits the twisted metal, it really highlights the artificial reef effect. Our tip: go in the late morning, the light penetration really brings out the textures. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the quiet dignity of maritime history and the subtle beauty of nature reclaiming human endeavour.
