Elpida - Larnaca

The Elpida wreck in Larnaca is one of our favourite spots in Cyprus, and often gets overshadowed by her more famous neighbour, the Zenobia. We think that’s a shame, because the Elpida is a solid dive, a purpose-sunk cargo ship sitting upright at around 30 metres. What we love about her is the immediate sense of scale. You drop down, and suddenly this massive silhouette looms out of the blue, decks intact, superstructure still proud. The penetration here is fantastic for those with the right training. You can duck into the engine room, swim through cargo holds, and even explore the bridge. Sunlight shafts through the openings, illuminating schools of sardines that dart in and out, reflecting the light like scattered diamonds. Outside, the wreck is completely encrusted; black leather sponges drape like velvet, and we’ve seen some huge Variable Loggerhead Sponges clinging to the bow. Keep an eye out for Silver-cheeked Toadfish lurking in the darker corners. While the wreck itself is the main draw, the nearby sea grass beds, full of Mediterranean tapeweed, are worth a slow drift too. It’s a dive that rewards repeat visits, offering something new each time you explore her depths.
