BETTOLINA (POSSIBLY) - Corsica
There’s a strange beauty to the Bettolina. We say "possibly" because its identity is still a bit of a local mystery, a charming quirk that only adds to its appeal. Lying at a friendly 12 metres, this 50-metre lighter vessel is a perfect shallow dive, especially good for those wanting to spend some real time exploring without rushing the deco. What we love about the Bettolina is how completely it has surrendered to the sea. The wreck itself is a skeletal structure, but it’s completely smothered in marine life. You’ll weave through schools of damselfish that shimmer like oil slicks in the shafts of sunlight, and we’ve often spotted octopuses peeking from crevices within the hull. It’s an easy-going dive, no real current to speak of, so you can really take your time poking around. Our favourite part is lingering over the encrusting sponges and bright nudibranchs, often missed on deeper, darker wrecks. It’s perfect for photographers or anyone who appreciates the quiet dignity of a wreck taken by the ocean.

Off the coast of Corsica lies a 50-metre wreck that is possibly the remains of a lighter or barge known as the Bettolina. The vessel's true identity and the story of its sinking are shrouded in mystery. What is known is that it provides an excellent dive in the clear Mediterranean waters. Situated at an accessible depth of 12 metres, the wreck is suitable for divers of all certification levels. Its large, open structure, characteristic of a barge, allows for easy and safe exploration. The 'Dangerous Wreck' classification serves as a reminder to be mindful of sharp edges or potential collapse, but for the cautious diver, the Bettolina offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and a playground for the abundant local marine life.
