FERRANDO - Marseille & Calanques

Ferrando is one of our favourite wreck dives in the Marseille area. We love it because it’s not just a collection of rusty metal; it feels like a genuine window into wartime history. The wreck lies at 25 metres, making it accessible for most advanced open water divers, and while it’s classified as dangerous, that’s more about its age than any tricky currents. It’s an old cargo ship, sunk during WWII, and rumour has it she was carrying supplies for the German army when she went down. We often find ourselves spending the entire dive just slowly circumnavigating the main structure. The bow section is particularly intact, and you can still make out the anchor chains running along the deck. Over the decades, the wreck has become a fantastic artificial reef. Look closely and you’ll spot moray eels peering out from gaps in the plating, schools of damselfish flitting through the holds, and often a curious conger eel or two tucked away in the darker corners. The ambient light at 25m often gives the wreck a moody, atmospheric feel, especially on a slightly overcast day – it really enhances the sense of history. We’d suggest a dive light to properly illuminate some of the deeper nooks.
