L Espingole - Marseille & Calanques

L'Espingole isn't just another wreck; it's a moody, atmospheric dive, one of our favourites in the Calanques when we’re looking for something a bit different. She was a French patrol boat, sunk by the Germans in 1944, and now she sits upright at around 30 metres, mostly intact. As you descend, the light shifts to a deep blue, and the wreck emerges from the gloom. We love swimming along her deck, imagining the final moments. The real draw here is the way the wreck has become a home. We’ve seen conger eels peering from every dark corner, their heads swaying slightly as you pass. Schools of damselfish often cloud the superstructure, and the occasional scorpionfish camouflages itself against the metal, a reminder to watch where you put your hands. For experienced divers who appreciate history and the way the sea reclaims things, L'Espingole is a truly captivating dive. She's not a riot of colour, but rather a study in muted tones and the resilience of marine life.
