La Barge de Carro et Aile - Marseille & Calanques

La Barge de Carro, and the nearby "Aile" (wing) section, is a wreck dive that really delivers a sense of history. We love how the wreck is broken up, lying in sections that feel like a scattered archaeological site. Swimming through the main holds of the barge, you’re surrounded by schooling damselfish and glinting silversides. Inside, conger eels often peek out from shadowy corners. Our favourite part has to be the detached wing section. It’s a bit deeper and truly eerie, a ghostly metal structure now completely encrusted with colourful gorgonians. The light plays beautifully here, filtering through the water and highlighting the purple and orange growth. This site is best for experienced wreck divers who appreciate exploration rather than just a single intact structure. We’d suggest going on a calm day; visibility can be a bit variable in this area of the Mediterranean, and you want to really soak in the atmosphere of the fragmented wreckage. It’s a dive that tells a story, even if you don't know the full history beforehand.
