Le Chaouen Wreck - Marseille & Calanques

The Le Chaouen is a proper wreck dive, sitting upright and mostly intact on a sandy bottom at 33 metres. You drop down, and it just materialises out of the blue, this cargo ship, sunk back in 1970 after hitting the Grand Congloué island. For us, it’s not just a big chunk of metal; it feels like a living museum. We love exploring the holds, which are surprisingly open and easy to navigate for anyone comfortable with their buoyancy. Sunlight streams through the openings, illuminating schools of salema that twist and turn as you pass. Keep an eye out for conger eels tucked into the darker corners, and if you’re lucky, a marbled electric ray might be resting on the deck. The coral growth here is impressive for a wreck, splashes of red gorgonian clinging to the hull, and the bow, at around 20 metres, is our favourite spot for photos. It’s a site that rewards multiple visits, revealing new details each time.
