Why dive here
With 157+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and mobula rays (devil rays) - Le Fer a Cheval offers some of Marseille & Calanques's richest diving. Water ranges 14-25°C, warmest July, August, September.
Le Fer a Cheval, or "The Horseshoe", lives up to its name with a horseshoe-shaped rock formation just off the coast of Marseille. It’s a straightforward dive, often used by local dive centers for introductory dives or refresher courses. You'll find yourself exploring small cracks and crevices, spotting blennies, gobies, and occasionally a curious octopus tucked away. It's a decent spot for knocking off some rust or getting comfortable in the Mediterranean without strong currents or deep profiles.
