LE GLENN MARTIN - Marseille & Calanques
The Glenn Martin, a World War II bomber, lies broken but fascinating on the seabed, a short boat ride from Marseille. We love it because it’s not just a pile of metal, it’s a story. You descend onto the sandy bottom, around 30 metres down, and there it is – wings detached, fuselage split, but the engines are still recognisable, dark and barnacle-encrusted. Swimming through the wreckage, you can almost feel the history. Shoals of glinting damselfish flit in and out of the skeletal frame, and we often spot conger eels poking their heads from pipes and crevices. The visibility here can be excellent, and with the Mediterranean light filtering down, it paints the scene in an ethereal blue. Our favourite part is peeking into the cockpit area, imagining the final moments. It's a dive that combines history with a vibrant artificial reef, perfect for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate a sombre, accessible piece of the past. Strong currents aren't usually an issue, making it a relaxed, thought-provoking dive.
