Le Junker 88 de Cassis - Marseille & Calanques

We love a good plane wreck, and the Junker 88 de Cassis is a real standout, even if it is a bit of a deep one. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the sheer size of it, sitting upright on the seabed. You can see the cockpit, the engines, the wings – the whole thing is remarkably intact, a proper ghost of the war. Swim through the bomb bay, or peer into the crew compartments; there are so many nooks and crannies to explore. It’s been down there long enough for the marine life to really move in, so expect to find plenty of conger eels in the darker spots, and often some big scorpionfish perched on the fuselage. For us, it’s the sense of history mixed with the developing reef that makes it so compelling. We’d suggest this one for experienced wreck divers who appreciate a slower pace and want to soak in the atmosphere. Remember your torch; it gets dark inside, and that’s where some of the best macro life often hides.
