Le ponton-grue, or the ‘Crane Pontoon,’ sits in the vibrant blue of the Mediterranean, a fascinating contrast of history and natural reclamation. We love this site for its character – it’s not just a sunken object, but a genuine piece of Marseille’s industrial past, transformed. As you descend, the sheer bulk of the pontoon emerges from the haze, its crane arm reaching out into the depths like a skeletal finger. This isn’t a delicate wreck. It's robust, an iron behemoth now draped in orange gorgonian fans and fuzzy sponges. Exploring the nooks and crannies, you’ll find schools of damselfish flitting through the beams, and moray eels peeking out from shadows. On a good day, with the sun streaming down, the light plays across the metalwork, highlighting the surprisingly lush growth. It’s a site that suits divers who appreciate wrecks with a story, offering plenty to explore without being overly complex. We’d suggest a slow, deliberate dive here, giving yourself time to really soak in the atmosphere. Keep an eye out for nudibranchs, too; the sponges are a prime feeding ground.
