P SCHIAFFINO - Marseille & Calanques

The P. Schiaffino is our kind of wreck. Not just some scattered remains, but a proper, intact cargo ship, sitting upright at 45 metres. Dropping down, you feel the chill of the deep Mediterranean, then the huge bow looms out of the blue, its lines still sharp after decades on the seabed. We love seeing the cargo holds open, just begging for a peek inside, imagining what she carried. This isn’t a rummage-through-the-debris sort of dive; it's an exploration. Look closely and you’ll find conger eels peering from dark corners, their heads swaying gently. Schools of damselfish often flicker above the deck, catching the faint light filtering down. We'd suggest checking the local dive centre for current conditions; strong currents can sometimes sweep through here, making the descent a bit more exciting than you might want. It's a dive for those comfortable with depth, who appreciate the history and the silent, slow takeover by the sea.
