TORPILLE (POSSIBLY) - Marseille & Calanques

The "Torpille (Possibly)" in the Calanques is one of those dives that sticks with you, a genuinely atmospheric wreck at 48m. It’s not about huge schools of fish here, but the sheer mystery of the site. We love dropping down onto the twisted metal, knowing it’s likely an Allied torpedo from a submarine, perhaps even French, that just… didn’t quite make it. The wreck itself isn’t massive, more a collection of distinctive parts scattered across the seabed, but the history is palpable. You’ll spend your bottom time tracing the outline of what was once a highly sophisticated piece of machinery. Look for the distinct propeller and the fin section – these are our favourite parts. Over the years, the metal has become a canvas for red gorgonians, their delicate fans swaying gently in the barely perceptible current. Keep an eye out for conger eels tucked into the darker recesses; they often make their homes in the most unexpected places. This site is definitely one for experienced divers who appreciate history and a good story more than a wall of fish. Plan your deco carefully, and you’ll have plenty of time to soak in the quiet solitude of this intriguing piece of wartime history.
