Torpilleur T 178 - Marseille & Calanques

The Torpilleur T 178 isn't just a hunk of metal on the seabed. It’s a proper French warship, sunk in 1944, sitting upright and surprisingly intact on a sandy bottom. We love how the stern gun is still perfectly angled, as if waiting for an enemy, and the bow is wonderfully broken, spilling its secrets into the sand. You’ll find schools of barracuda hanging motionless in the current just above the deck, and we've often seen large groupers peering out from under the collapsed deck plating. The real beauty here is exploring the torpedo tubes, which are now home to nudibranchs and small crabs. We'd suggest aiming for a morning dive before the boat traffic picks up, when the light streams down and illuminates the wreck's structure beautifully. It's a great dive for anyone who appreciates military history and a wreck that still retains its character, rather than just being a pile of indistinguishable debris. Just watch for strong currents; they can pick up quickly, adding an extra layer of excitement, or challenge, depending on your perspective.
