TROIS MATS - Marseille & Calanques

The Trois Mats wreck. A name that always gets a nod from local divers, and for good reason. She’s a proper wooden sailing ship, sitting upright and mostly intact on a flat sandy bottom at 40 metres. Diving a wooden wreck is always a special experience, and this one really delivers. We love the atmosphere here. Dropping down onto her deck, you can still make out the mast steps and the general lines of her hull. It feels like stepping back in time, and there’s a quiet reverence to it. You’ll find plenty of resident fish life – conger eels peek from dark corners, and we’ve seen some surprisingly large lobsters tucked away in the deeper crevices. Our favourite part? Exploring the stern, where the rudder is still in place. It’s a photographer’s dream down there, especially on a sunny day when the light filters through the water. This one is definitely for experienced divers comfortable with depth and perhaps a touch of current, which can sometimes sweep through.
