TRONCON (STERN) - Marseille & Calanques

The Tronçon, or what’s left of its stern anyway, lies in a manageable 45 metres, an inviting deep dive for those comfortable with their buoyancy. We’ve always found this wreck to have a real sense of history, even if you’re only looking at half a ship. Dropping down, the stern section emerges from the blue, usually with good visibility allowing you to appreciate the scale. The propeller is a particular highlight, often draped in gorgonians and swarming with anthias, a pop of colour against the rusted metal. Exploring the various deck levels, you’ll find cracks and crevices providing homes for lobsters and conger eels. We love how the Mediterranean marine life has truly reclaimed this space; it feels more like an artificial reef than a tragic sunken vessel. If you time your dive for late morning, the sunlight filtering through the water can create some dramatic lighting effects around the wreck, a truly atmospheric experience. It’s a rewarding dive for advanced divers seeking a proper wreck exploration without extreme depths or currents.
