KAPTANVASSOS - Alonissos Marine Park

The *Kaptanvassos* wreck is more than just a metal hulk; it’s a time capsule. Lying upright in just 13 metres of water, this 60-metre cargo ship went down in 1976 and is now completely encrusted. We love that the main deck, with its open holds, offers a real sense of scale without needing to penetrate. You can peer into the dark, cavernous spaces, imagining the cargo, and see the bow still proudly pointing skyward. What truly makes *Kaptanvassos* special is the sheer density of life that has claimed it. We've seen moray eels peeking from every nook, their heads swaying slightly. Schools of saddled bream swarm the superstructure, a shimmering curtain you can swim through. For us, the highlight is exploring the bridge area, now a vibrant garden of sponges and anemones, with damselfish darting between the crevices. It’s an accessible wreck, perfect for those comfortable with their buoyancy, allowing plenty of time to explore without deep deco limits. Go early to avoid any boat traffic.
