KARAPIPERIS VI - Alonissos Marine Park

The Karapiperis VI, a tug scuttled by a time-bomb in '91, isn't a deep dive, but it's one of Alonissos Marine Park's most intriguing. Sitting upright at a flat six metres, it’s remarkably intact for its violent end. We love finning over the wheelhouse, seeing the gauges still nestled in their console – a real ghost ship vibe. The explosion must have been carefully placed; the hull is split, revealing the engine room, which is an easy swim-through if you’re comfortable in confined spaces. For a Mediterranean wreck, it’s surprisingly busy with life. Small schools of damselfish flit in and out of the superstructure, and we’ve often spotted moray eels peeking from beneath plates of twisted metal. The shallow depth means fantastic light penetration, illuminating the wreck’s details and the colourful sponges now clinging to its bulkheads. Our pick for an afternoon dive, when the sun angle really brings out the blues and greens. It's an excellent spot for wreck photography, especially for capturing the eerie, preserved interior.
