MARATHOCAMBOS - Alonissos Marine Park

Marathocambos, a motor vessel, settled upright on the seabed back in 1971. Diving here, you're looking at a site for experienced wreck enthusiasts. The stern sits deeper, around 58 metres, while the bow comes up to a manageable 40 metres. This ship feels like a proper time capsule. We love the way the light filters through the clear Aegean water, illuminating the main deck, where groupers often lurk. Swim around the mast, which still stands proud, and watch for passing amberjacks in the blue. Inside, you can penetrate the wheelhouse and engine room, though always with proper training and caution. Our favourite feature is the cargo hold, now a cavernous home for schools of sardines and glinting bream. The visibility is usually excellent, making the descent a calm affair, but keep an eye on your bottom time down there. We'd suggest pairing this with a deeper dive computer and maybe a rebreather if you want to properly explore the deeper sections without rushing.
