MASTROPETROS - Alonissos Marine Park

Mastropetros is one of our favourite deep wrecks in Alonissos, a carrier vessel that went down in 1999. She rests upright, surprisingly intact for her age, with her stern sitting at about 31 metres. It’s a proper dive, certainly for experienced wreck divers comfortable with depth and perhaps a little current, though it’s often quite calm. We love Mastropetros because it still feels like a ship, not just a pile of metal. You can swim along her main deck, seeing the structure of the cargo holds, now open to the sea. The bridge superstructure is still there, a ghostly outline, and we’ve even peeked into what would have been the crew quarters. It’s not just about the history though. The wreck has become a home for all sorts of things. Schools of damselfish shimmer in and out of the shadows, and we've spotted large groupers lurking under ledges. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked away in any crevice you can find. The visibility here is usually excellent, giving you a proper sense of the wreck’s scale as you descend. Go early if you can; you'll have her all to yourself.
