Monrosa Wreck - Alonissos Marine Park

The Monrosa Wreck is our pick for a standout dive in the Alonissos Marine Park, though calling it a wreck might be a bit generous. It’s more of a scatter, really, what’s left of an old cargo ship that went down in the 1950s. We love it because it’s a living history lesson, not some perfectly intact museum piece. You drop onto a jumble of metal, broken plates, and even an old motor block, all spread across a sandy bottom at around 25 metres. Sunlight filters down, making the metal shimmer. Look closely and you'll spot tiny nudibranchs, usually a flash of orange or purple, clinging to the rust. We often see schools of damselfish flitting through the beams, and octopus are regulars here, camouflaged against the encrusted metal. It’s a site for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a broken-down vessel slowly reclaimed by the sea. Give it some time and explore the smaller nooks. It's not about penetration, it's about observation.
