PORTUGAL - Alonissos Marine Park

The Portugal wreck, resting off Tripiti Rock in Alonissos Marine Park, isn't your average Mediterranean metal hulk. She went down in 1957, breaking clean in two, and that split really dictates the dive. The stern section, lying deeper at around 32 meters, is our favourite part. It’s still quite intact, with the propeller and rudder surprisingly visible, and we’ve seen some seriously chunky groupers lurking in the shadows there – real old residents. What we love about Portugal is how accessible it feels, despite the depth. You can trace the deck line, peek into the old engine room, and the sense of history is palpable. The mid-section is more broken up, but it's where the fusiliers often gather, swirling in thick, silvery clouds that momentarily block out the light. It's a proper adventure for experienced divers who appreciate a wreck with a story, not just a structure. Strong currents can pick up here, especially around the rock, so good buoyancy and an eye on the dive guide are essential. We find early mornings often offer the calmest conditions and the best visibility, which usually pushes past 20 meters on a good day.
