RABUNION III - Alonissos Marine Park

The Rabunion III, right in the heart of Alonissos Marine Park, is one of those wrecks that really grabs you. We often find ourselves drawn back to it, especially when we want a shallow, relaxed dive with plenty to see. This bulk carrier ran aground back in '86, during a storm, and now sits in just five metres of water. That makes it perfect for longer dives, even for newer divers, but don’t think for a second it’s just a training site. The ship itself, almost 60 metres long, is surprisingly intact in places. You can swim over the bow, still pointing towards the surface, and see the anchor chains draped across the deck. The hull is a tapestry of life now, thick with sponges and anenomes. We love exploring the collapsed superstructure, where schools of damselfish flit in and out of the rusted metal. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked into the darker corners and octopus camouflaged against the hull plating. Our favourite part is the stern section, where the propeller is still clearly visible, encrusted with growth and surrounded by shimmering silversides. It’s a gentle, atmospheric dive, full of detail, and a real testament to how quickly the sea reclaims its own.
