Vatera beach Shipwreck - Alonissos Marine Park

Vatera beach isn't about sand between your toes. It’s about plunging into the past. We’re talking about a wreck, a classic Greek merchant ship, that lies surprisingly intact on the seabed. You can see the cargo holds, the deck structure, even some of the pottery scattered around, still waiting for its journey to finish. It’s a proper archaeological dive, but one where the marine life has definitely moved in. This isn’t a deep dive, making it accessible for most certified divers, which we love. We've seen moray eels peeking from crevices, schools of damselfish flitting through the superstructure, and the occasional curious grouper patrolling the deck. The light filtering down through the relatively shallow water gives the whole scene an ethereal glow, especially in the late morning. We’d suggest going then to catch that sweet spot of visibility and light. Just remember, look don't touch, this wreck is history in motion. It's a proper step back in time, and far more rewarding than just another reef dive.
