VERNICOS NANA - Alonissos Marine Park

The Vernicos Nana is a deep, moody wreck that just keeps giving. We’re talking about a tugboat that went down in 1979 after a run-in with a tanker, and it’s now resting upright on the seabed at 60 metres. This isn't a beginner's site, obviously. You need your deep certs and good trim, but the reward is a spectacularly intact vessel. We love dropping down the line and watching the shape of the tug emerge from the blue. The superstructure is still largely there, providing swim-throughs into the wheelhouse and engine room if you’re comfortable with overhead environments. Shoals of tiny glassfish shimmer in the darker sections, and we’ve seen some seriously chunky groupers lurking in the shadows of the bow. Look closely and you’ll spot nudibranchs crawling across the deck plates, along with the occasional moray eel peeking from a porthole. It’s a quiet, reflective dive, perfect for advanced wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history and the slow, steady reclamation by the sea. Aim for a slack tide; the current can pick up out here.
