Wreck of French protected cruiser Châteaurenault - Alonissos Marine Park

Diving the Albatros is less about blazing colour and more about atmosphere, a real piece of history brought to life by the cold North Sea. This Type 23 torpedo boat, sunk in 1940, lies broken but still recognisable, a steel skeleton draped in green and brown algae. We love how the light filters down through the plankton-rich water, creating an ethereal glow around the stern and bow sections. Our pick for exploration is definitely the engine room, if conditions allow and you’re suitably qualified; it’s tight, but you get a real sense of the ship’s scale there. Keep an eye out for poor cod and butterfish darting in and out of the plating, and we’ve often seen big schools of whiting swirling around the mast. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery here, averaging 5-10 metres, so patience is key. We’d suggest diving this one on a slack tide to make the most of your bottom time, as currents can pick up. It's a fantastic wreck for divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a chill; leave your wide-angle lens at home and pack a good torch.
