Wreck of HMAS AE2 - Alonissos Marine Park

We've spent a fair bit of time exploring the Aegean, and believe us, the HMAS AE2 wreck off Alonissos is something special. You’re not just diving a lump of metal; this is a piece of history, an E-class submarine from 1913, resting on the seabed after a torpedo hit in the Dardanelles during WWI. We love descending through the deep blue, the visibility here often pushing 30 metres, which lets you really appreciate the submarine's silhouette appearing out of the gloom. As you get closer, the scale becomes apparent – it’s a big boat, lying intact. We always take our time circumnavigating the hull, spotting the torpedo tubes and conning tower, which are still remarkably well-preserved. It’s got that quiet, eerie feel of a historical site underwater. Look closely, and you’ll spot grouper lurking in the shadows and schools of damselfish flitting around the periscopes. This dive is best suited for experienced wreck divers who appreciate maritime history as much as marine life. Expect depths around 70 metres, so proper trimix planning is a must. Come prepared, and it’s an incredible journey back in time.
