HMMS 101 (POSSIBLY) - Halkidiki

HMMS 101, lying at 40 metres, is one of those wrecks that just grabs you. We love the way she sits upright, almost perfectly preserved, a real snapshot from the Second World War. Built in '42, she met her end in '44 off Salonika, a minesweeper that didn't quite make it home. Dropping down onto her deck, you’re often greeted by schools of little damselfish fluttering around the gun mounts, or a lone scorpionfish tucked into a porthole, perfectly camouflaged. The wreck itself is about 38 metres long, a good size for an extended no-decompression dive if you manage your gas right. We always suggest trying to swim the length of the deck, peering into the open hatches. You'll often find conger eels peering back from the darker recesses. The stern section is our favourite part, with the propeller still largely intact, despite the passage of time. Visibility here can vary, but on a good day, the sunlight penetrates deep enough to give the whole scene a really haunting, ethereal glow. This site is definitely one for advanced divers comfortable with deeper profiles and managing their bottom time, but the reward is a tangible piece of history and some very cool encounters.
