Limeni Wreck - Zakynthos & Ionian Islands

Alright, the Limeni Wreck in Zakynthos. We think this site is often overlooked, overshadowed by the island’s more famous attractions. That’s a mistake, in our opinion. This isn't some pristine, intact vessel, mind you. What you get here is a much older wreck, a freighter that broke up decades ago, now scattered across a sloping seabed. It’s the sheer scale of the debris field that we love, huge chunks of metal and machinery becoming new homes for the reef. We've spent hours here, just drifting over the plates and girders, watching moray eels peek out from shadowy crevices. The way the light filters down through the Mediterranean blue, catching on the corroded metal, it has a ghostly quality. Look closely, and you’ll spot octopus camouflaged against the rust, and schools of damselfish flitting through the open sections. It’s a gentle dive, generally calm, so it suits anyone comfortable navigating a large, sprawling site without strong currents. Our pick for best time to visit? Late morning, before any boat traffic picks up, when the light is just right for exploring the darker nooks.
