CITTA DI SASSARI - Portofino & Liguria

The Citta di Sassari wreck off Portofino is one of our favourite dives in Liguria, a proper historical piece rather than just a collection of rusty metal. This steamship went down in 1917, torpedoed by a submarine, and it sits upright on a sandy bottom at 25 metres. We love the scale of it, 86 metres long, giving you plenty to explore without needing to go deep. Dropping down, the bow comes into view first, often shrouded in a hazy cloud of small fish – damselfish and chromis, mainly. You can fin along the deck, past the collapsed bridge section, and towards the stern. Look for moray eels tucked into crevices; they’re pretty common here. The propeller is often the highlight, encrusted and attracting schools of saddled seabream. It’s a comfortable dive for anyone with a bit of wreck experience, perfect for a long bottom time to really soak in the history. We'd suggest going on a weekday if you can, as it sees a fair bit of boat traffic on weekends.
